Overview
Also known as the Snake Plant and the Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, these plants are characterized by their stiff, sword-like leaves that grow in an upright manner. Native to the arid deserts of east Africa, they are slow growers, but can reach up to 12 feet tall with the right care. There are over 70 species of Sansevieria, coming in shades of green with yellow and white variegation. Sanseviereia perform a specific type of photosynthesis at night, which allows them to release oxygen at that time. They are, unfortunately, toxic to pets. Ingestion will cause mouth and stomach irritation, and possible vomiting due to the presence of saponins in the leaves.
Lighting/ watering/ care
Sansevieria prefer bright, indirect light, but can tolerate low light.
Water with filtered or rain water when soil is 100% dry. These plants are incredibly drought tolerant.
Keep your Snake plant in temperatures between 60-80°F with humidity between 40%- 60%.
Sansevieria can be propagated via division or leaf cutting. Either separate a pup from the mother plant and repot, or snip a leaf and place in water in a sunny spot.
FAQ
Why are the leaves on my Sansevieria leaning?
Underwatering can cause it to have soft, floppy leaves and shriveled roots. Overwatering can cause rot at the base of its leaves, causing them to droop.
