Overview

Hypoestes are known for their bold, eye-catching foliage. With leaves of pink, white, red, or purple base and green spots, it’s no secret where they received the nickname “polka dot plant”. Native to South Africa, Madagascar, and Southeast Asia, there are over 100 species within this genus, which derives its name from the Greek words “hypo” (under) and “estia” (hearth). They have a moderate growth rate, and reach up to 1-2 feet tall and wide in ideal conditions. Hypoestes have a relatively short lifespan, lasting for about a year and begin to deteriorate shortly after producing blooms. Cutting away flowers as the Hypoestes blooms can help prolong its lifespan, as it will either die, or enter a dormant period once they finish blooming. The Hypoestes is safe to keep around both humans and animals.

Lighting/ watering/ care

Hypoestes do best in bright, indirect light

Water using filtered or rain water when soil is 10% dry.

Hypoestes grow well in higher humidity levels ideally between 50%- 75% humidity, and temperatures between 65-80°F. They’re averse to the cold.

Propagating by stem cuttings is the best way to propagate Hypoestes. Cut a piece of stem from the parent plant, and root in either a jar of water or in moist potting mix.
